Fashion Forward

January 16, 2011

I have always been one to wear what I like, regardless of style or trend. Sometimes, I present myself with a very classic look while other times I look more artsy, eclectic, or trendy (a la leopard print many moons ago). Over the past year or so, I’ve decided it is time to define my style. Am I artsy? Probably not. Am I trendy? Let’s face it – I am too cheap to be trendy. So what is my style?

While my style is yet to be determined, it begs another question in my mind. Why do people spend so much time deciding on the perfect outfit yet so little time considering the weight of their words?

Style is something very unique to every person, and it isn’t hard to see that people tend to invest a lot of money and a lot of time into what they wear, hoping to project the perfect image of themselves. It is true that outfits can have an impact on a person’s attitude and probably also affect whether or not someone is accepted into a certain group. It is also important for first impressions…hence, why most people look their best during job interviews.

But what if we took that same energy and re-focused it on our words? What if people cared enough to notice the impact of their words? Or better yet, what if we cared enough to choose our words specifically to benefit others? We would choose words of hope and encouragement, words of discipline when necessary, and always words of friendship and love.

This week, I ask you not to spend as much time on being fashion forward. Instead, be intentional – about your image – using your words.

Word of the Day: Intentional

Word to the Wise:  “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.”  Proverbs 31:26

Disclaimer: This is not an excuse to wear your pajamas to work or leave the house unclothed. Please use your best judgment when interpreting what it means to spend less time being “fashion forward.”When in doubt, ask a friend who is honest and intentional with his or her words…
