2. What did you enjoy most about this book? The characters? The friendships? The history? The inspiration and achievements?

1. This book hits on a lot of hot button topics: immigration, war, cultural differences, etc. Do you think it was an accurate portrayal? Why or why not?

2. The zodiac was a large part of who the Louies and other Chinese Americans were. Pearl was a dragon, May was a sheep, Joy was a tiger, and Sam was an ox. Do you think these characters fit their role? Why or why not?

April 30, 2011

Title: The Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins

What did you think of The Hunger Games?
Share your opinions in the comments section and answer any of the discussion questions that you want to answer. Check back for more comments, and join the conversation!

Book Club Discussion Questions:

1. This book portrays an oppressive government that controls the people and their sustenance.  How did this oppression make you feel? Where else have you seen this kind of oppression in the world? In our history?

2. While portraying oppression in many ways, this book also portrays equality in other ways. What examples of equality did you see?

3. During the games, Katniss realized that the only way Haymitch could have won was to outsmart the others, and we definitely see the games filled with various strategies.  How does this mentality surface in our own culture?

4.  The “power play” of the games came when Katniss and Peeta realized the Capitol could be left without a victor, yet after outsmarting the Capitol, we see them once again being controlled by the government. Do you think Katniss and Peeta really won the games? State your case.

5. The Hunger Games is the first book in a series. What are you most looking forward to in the books that follow?
