Her Story

  1. What did you want to be at age 5?
I didn’t think about what I wanted to be when I grew up when I was just 5 years old. I was too busy in the pecking order with my two brothers, one older and one younger.
  2. What did you want to be at age 15?
When I was 15 years old, I thought I wanted to be a nurse. It sounded like a noble profession. There weren’t many career choices for young women back in my day. I might have realized that dream and been a good nurse, but by the time I was 18 years old, I had my first child.
  3. What did you become?
I became a wife and mother of two young sons by the time I was 20 years old, and 6 years later my precious baby girl was born.
  4. What has been your biggest disappointment in life?
The biggest disappointment in my life has been not getting a college degree and having a career and my family. I had dreams just like everyone else but I made a mistake and didn’t get to pursue them.
I don’t call it a disappointment but a tragedy that my beautiful daughter did not live to fulfill her dreams and aspirations.
  5. What was your biggest mistake to date?
My biggest mistake was believing in someone’s lie and hoping I could fix things.
  6. What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?
By far my biggest accomplishment is my three children. I have been blessed to watch my sons grow up to be strong, healthy, and successful adults with good careers and loving families.
  7. How do you define success?
I define success as having a dream and pursuing that dream, but if that dream is not possible, then you make your own dreams come true by doing what makes you and those around you happy. You take what you have worked hard for all your life and appreciate it and all the people around you that make you happy in life. If you dwell on “what ifs” you will never be a happy person.
  8. Do you consider yourself successful?
I do consider myself successful. I have many interests. I paint, scrapbook, garden. I love to read. I am the member of clubs and organizations, some that I have organized myself. I travel with my friends, and I am a preacher’s wife and enjoy that aspect of my life…
  9. What is the best advice you have ever been given?
To tell you the truth, I have never been given much advice from anyone I can think of except maybe some of my school teachers and Sunday School teachers when I was growing up. I know I didn’t get much from my family members.
  10. If you could give your younger self advice, what would it be?
I would tell a young me that I am a worthy person and can do anything that I decide that I want to do. I could be anything that I wanted to be.
  11. What is your biggest struggle?
My biggest struggle is fighting depression and anxiety. I am by nature a person that feels like she is wound up too tight like a clock. I fight it everyday. I feel like I am waiting for the other shoe to drop at any moment.
  12. What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is knowing that my sons and their children are all well and happy especially when I get a phone call from one of them checking up on me. I must confess that I don’t get enough of them.
  13. What makes you tick?
What makes me tick is having projects. I love a project, to have a goal and work toward that goal to completion. It is a real good feeling to know you have accomplished something worthwhile. It doesn’t have to be something big every time.
  14. What do you want my readers to know about you or about life in general?
I would like for your readers to know that I am just like they are. I may be 50 years older than some of them, but I still have dreams and plans for my life. Not to dream is to die. I still have unfinished projects and places to go and things to do. I just hope I have time to do them.
